Throughout the journey, your guide will introduce the fascinating history of the Ionian cities and their contributions to architecture, philosophy, trade and culture.
Priene – A Masterpiece of Ancient City Planning
Our first archaeological destination is Priene, a remarkable ancient Greek city situated on the southern slopes of Mount Mycale.
Priene is especially celebrated for its carefully planned streets, arranged according to a grid system traditionally associated with Hippodamian urban planning.
As you explore the ancient city, discover the remains of its impressive theatre, public buildings, residential quarters and the Temple of Athena.
Your guide will explain how the city's layout reflected the social and political organisation of the ancient Greek world.
Surrounded by impressive mountain scenery and overlooking the former landscape of the Maeander Valley, Priene offers a peaceful and atmospheric archaeological experience.
Miletus – The Birthplace of Scientific Thought
Continue to Miletus, once one of the most influential cities of the ancient Greek world.
In antiquity, Miletus was an important maritime and commercial centre, renowned for its extensive trading connections and intellectual achievements.
The city is closely associated with pioneering thinkers such as Thales, Anaximander and Anaximenes, whose ideas helped shape the early development of philosophy and scientific inquiry.
During your guided visit, admire the magnificent ancient theatre and discover the remains of a city that played an extraordinary role in Mediterranean history.
Learn how centuries of sediment deposited by the Maeander River gradually transformed the surrounding coastline, leaving this once-powerful harbour city far from the modern sea.
Lunch Break
Enjoy a relaxing lunch break at a local restaurant along the route.
Take time to unwind and reflect on the extraordinary history of the ancient cities before continuing your journey.
Didyma – The Sacred Temple of Apollo
Our final archaeological destination is Didyma, home to one of the most impressive ancient sanctuaries in the Mediterranean world.
The monumental Temple of Apollo was a major religious centre, renowned for its oracle and its close historical connection with Miletus.
As you approach the sanctuary, admire the enormous surviving columns and the extraordinary scale of its ancient architecture.
Explore the temple complex while your guide explains the significance of the oracle, the religious traditions of ancient Ionia and the ambitious construction of this remarkable monument.
Although the temple was never fully completed, its surviving remains provide a powerful impression of the grandeur and architectural achievements of the ancient world.
Didyma offers a memorable conclusion to your exploration of the archaeological treasures of Ionia.
